Benue Revenue Generation hits N1bn monthly- BIRS *As BIRS Boss Laments interference by some Influential people in its wars against illegal taxes, road blocks The Benue State Internal Revenue Service, (BIRS) has announced that, revenue generation for the state is now about N1 billion monthly. Disclosing this at a press conference today in his office in Makurdi, Excutive Chairman of Benue State Internal Revenue Service, (BIRS), Terzungwe Atser, explained that some of the money collected have already been expended by the ministries, departments and agencies BIRS collects on their behalf as the sole agency of government authorised by the state tax law to collect revenues and taxes. He said though, the total money collected passes through BIRS accounts but have been disbursed to those various ministries and departments for expenditure as provided by the Benue Taxes and Revenue laws. He disclosed that, as part of the grand strategy to block revenue leakages and increase Internally Generated Revenue, BIRS has concluded plans for the automation of al it's process. The processes according to him will include both tax administration, human resource and financial management. "We are also in the process of reviewing the existing tax laws and harmonising the gazetted revenue items in order to solve once and for all the problem of multiplicity of taxes. "We are also proposing new tax laws to strengthen existing laws and block identified gaps in the existing laws. We are also working with the ministry of lands, survey and solid minerals to automate the land administration system in the state. This will drastically increase compliance in land related taxes and rates", he stated. The essence of the processess he explained is aimed at increasing the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the state that can conveniently fund the state's projects and over head costs. Atser however, regretted that some very influential persons and traditional rulers are behind the proliferation of illegal taxes and road blocks that have dominated markets and major highways across the state. He said, BIRS in collaboration with the security agencies in the state have between November last year and this month affect the arrest of over 76 culprits, some have been charged to various law courts while others are at certain levels of prosecution. He lamented further that some influential persons have been interfering in the process of prosecution of those arrested. He disclosed that the nefarious activities of illegal taxation and indiscriminate road blocks across the state by the criminal elements in the state are cripling the economy stateing that, traders and business people are been harassed and scared away from the state on daily basis. He explained further that Benue Tax Law as Gazetted recognises BIRS as the only authorised tax agency of government to collect taxes and revenues for the state warning that any other person assuming the role outside birs or without authorisation from BIRS is not only a criminal but an enemy of the state and must be treated as such.
